Philipus’s Biography

Philipus, well-known as Philip, is the founder of Styx Tattoo in New York and is a widely recognized leader in neo-traditional oriental tattooing. Philipus was born and raised in Indonesia, relocating to New York City in 1999. He began tattooing in 2002 and has worked every day since then honing his craft and working to improve his art. True to that ethos, Philipus is currently studying fine art at The Art Students League of New York with Michael Grimaldi. He is also studying at the National Academy School of Fine Art with Brandon Soloff, Nicholas Reynolds, and Eric March.

 2009 Philipus established Styx tattoo as a venue where tattoo artists were encouraged to convey their passion for creating superior and innovative body art, while consistently delivering quality customer service.

 A student of fine art, Philipus counts masters such as Michelangelo, Giovanni Bernini and Salvadore Dali as major influences. Philip especially enjoys fusing two different but very interesting styles of art; sinister Dark Arts style mixed with an imaginative and mysterious New School Japanese style. This is in addition to being an accomplished large-scale black and grey artist has put Philipus on the map for quality tattoos unlike any other.
